01 / Before you begin
Before you begin
You can keep posting publicly while reducing optional access to your phone, contact uploads and some uses of information from other businesses. Those are different choices from who can see your posts, and from whether information is used to train AI. None makes a public account anonymous or scrape-proof.
02 / Start here
Start with the changes that do not hide your work
- Give Instagram and Facebook access only to the photos you want to share.
- Turn off contact uploading, then delete contacts already uploaded.
- Remove unnecessary location access and avoid location tags on sensitive posts.
- Review Activity from other businesses, but do not mistake it for a collection-off switch.
- Keep personal identifiers out of your public profile and use an AI-training objection where available.
A current menu change: Meta is gradually replacing Accounts Center with Meta Account settings. You may see either name. The instructions below follow Meta’s current help pages rather than assuming everyone has the same rollout. Meta’s current settings note
03 / Photo access
Share a photo, not your whole camera roll
iPhone: Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos, choose Instagram or Facebook, and use limited access where offered. Review Contacts, Camera and Microphone in Privacy & Security too; allow only access you actually need. Apple documents category-by-category permission controls and a limited photo library that exposes selected items rather than the whole library. iPhone permissions, limited photo access
Android: Open Settings → Apps → Instagram or Facebook → Permissions. Review Photos and videos, Contacts, Location, Camera and Microphone. Choose selected-photo access or the system photo picker when available instead of broad library access. Android’s photo picker shares the photos and videos you select. Google’s permission instructions, photo picker
Facebook also has camera-roll suggestions, where available. Keep this opt-in feature off if you do not want that additional processing of unposted media. Meta says you can disable it in Facebook’s camera-roll settings. It says camera-roll media is not used for ad targeting. It also says this media is not used to improve AI at Meta unless you publish it or share it in an AI interaction. This is a separate choice from your phone’s photo permission. Meta’s camera-roll explanation
04 / Synced contacts
Stop uploading your address book, and remove the old copy
Instagram: Profile → Menu → Meta Account → Your Information and Permissions → Upload Contacts → select your profile → Connect Contacts off → Disconnect.
Then, on a computer: Instagram.com → Profile → Edit profile → See more in Meta Account → Your information and permissions → Manage Contacts → choose the profile if asked → Delete all → Delete.
Turning syncing off does not delete previously uploaded contacts. Turn it off on every device using the account and revoke the phone’s Contacts permission. Instagram says deletion can take up to 90 days, and contact-based recommendations may continue during that process. Instagram’s contact-syncing and deletion instructions
Facebook: In the app, use Menu → Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Upload contacts → Facebook account → Upload contacts off. Repeat on each device. Facebook’s setting does not also switch off Messenger contact uploading. Facebook contact-uploading instructions
Delete previously uploaded contacts separately using Facebook’s contact-deletion instructions. Revoking your phone’s Contacts permission alone does not remove the uploaded copy.
05 / Location
Keep your audience, not your precise whereabouts
iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Instagram or Facebook. Deny location access if you do not need it, or turn Precise Location off when approximate access is enough. Apple’s location controls
Android/Pixel: Settings → Location → App location permissions → Instagram or Facebook → Don’t allow, or choose the narrower access that fits what you use. Android 12 and later support separate approximate/precise choices. Google’s app-location controls, Android precision settings
Check what you post, too. Where Instagram Map is available, location sharing is opt-in, but location-tagged posts, reels and stories can appear on the Map separately. Avoid tagging your home, routine or live whereabouts when the location adds nothing useful to the post. Meta’s Map explanation
For iPhone photos, you can remove stored location with Photos → open photo → More → Adjust Location → No Location. If sharing through the Photos share sheet, Share → Options → Location off omits location for that share. That does not remove visible clues such as an address in the picture. Apple’s photo-location guidance
The limit: Removing GPS permission is not the same as hiding your location from Meta. It can still receive network information such as your IP address and use other location-related information. Meta Privacy Policy
06 / Outside-business activity
Limit outside-business personalization, without the “tracking off” myth
Meta is retiring Your activity off Meta technologies. Its updated Activity from other businesses control covers use of that activity to personalize ads and other content, including Feed recommendations and AI responses. The change began rolling out in the US and other countries in July 2026; it is not a universal, identical menu everywhere. Meta’s June 2026 announcement
In Facebook, open Menu → Settings & privacy → Settings → Meta Account → Your information and permissions → Activity from other businesses and decline that personalization. On a computer, start from your profile picture instead of Menu. Meta says your choice applies across profiles in the same Meta Account; separately managed accounts need their own review. The European Region and UK have different ad choices. Current instructions and regional choices
What this does not do: Businesses can still send Meta activity. Meta says it may anonymize that information or use it to improve products. Personalization can still use your activity on Meta, information you explicitly connect, and separately governed advertiser customer lists. Review audience-based advertising separately if you also want to manage list-based ads. This is not an AI-training opt-out. What the setting actually controls
On iPhone, add a separate device-level control: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking lets you deny tracking permission for an app. Apple says this blocks access to its advertising identifier and disallows tracking across other companies’ apps and sites under its rules. It does not make what you do inside Instagram or Facebook invisible to Meta. Apple’s tracking explanation
07 / Public profile
Make your public profile deliberate
Use a public-facing contact address if people need to reach you. Leave out your home address, personal phone number, full birth date and other details your audience does not need. Hiding a detail from visitors is different from deleting information supplied to Meta.
On Instagram, your name, username, profile photo and bio are visible to anyone on or off Instagram, even if an account is private. Treat those fields as publication, not storage. Instagram’s visibility rules
On Facebook, some profile information is always public, including your name, username/user ID, current profile photo and current cover photo; public posts and comments on public posts, Pages and public groups are public too. Use Privacy Checkup to review the audience for personal contact details and posts while keeping the work you want to promote public. Facebook public information, Privacy Checkup
08 / Discovery choices
Choose which discovery routes you actually want
These are optional reach trade-offs, not requirements for staying public.
Instagram search engines: If you are 18+ with a public professional account, Instagram permits search engines to index eligible public photos and videos, including reels, posts and story highlights. Older content can qualify too. You can stay public and turn this off in Account privacy, using the control for public photos and videos appearing in search-engine results. Meta’s article links directly to that settings page. Your profile information may still appear in search, and de-indexing is not immediate or guaranteed. Instagram indexing controls
Instagram profile suggestions: In a desktop or mobile browser, use Profile → Edit profile → Show account suggestions on profiles off → Submit. This also stops your account appearing in that suggestion placement on other profiles, not every possible discovery route. Leave it on if that reach is useful to you. Instagram profile suggestions
Facebook phone/email matching: On a computer, use Profile picture → Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and Visibility → How people find and contact you. Review People with your email address and People with your phone number separately; choose No one to stop suggestions based on those identifiers. Meta can still suggest your profile using other information. This is also separate from who can see your contact details on your profile. Facebook’s exact control and limits
09 / AI training
Treat AI training as a separate decision
Public content can be used for Meta’s generative-AI training. Turning off profile suggestions, search indexing or ad personalization is not a substitute for an AI objection. Meta’s public-content explanation
EU and UK: Meta offers objection forms through its AI-training notices and says it honors existing and new objections. Use the form provided for your account, save the confirmation and check what information and accounts it covers. Do not assume one submission covers every profile you manage. Availability elsewhere differs; there is no verified worldwide switch we can promise everyone. EU explanation, UK explanation
AI chats are another input. Do not put sensitive personal details into Meta AI just because your social profile is carefully configured. Meta says AI interactions can train its models. Private messages with friends and family are excluded from that training unless you or someone else shares them with an AI feature. Meta’s AI-interaction and message explanation
An objection is not a promise that previously trained models have forgotten your information, or that third parties cannot copy public posts. Avoid publishing anything you cannot tolerate being copied.
10 / What remains
What remains after this checklist?
Your public work remains public. Meta still processes information needed to run its services, including activity such as content you view and interact with, device/network information and information you choose to supply. These steps reduce particular inputs and uses; they do not create a zero-data account. Meta Privacy Policy
The aim is a smaller data footprint, not a smaller voice. Keep the useful public presence. Cut the optional access you do not need.
