How Grav protects private sharing

Not promises. Mechanisms.

Explore why people choose a private social network. Also read: Why we built it this way and What Grav+ actually is.

Grav is a private social network for sharing with friends, family, and people you choose. We build the important protections to be inspectable: what leaves your device, what our servers store, and which protections are enforced in the app and database.

Your photos leave your location behind

Photos and videos can contain embedded metadata, including capture time, device details, camera settings, and location when recorded. Image metadata is often called EXIF. It may not be visible when you view the photo, but someone with the file may be able to read it.

Before normal app uploads reach Grav's servers, photos are re-rendered and videos are exported with metadata containers cleared. We verify camera, camera-roll, edit, and share paths before treating this as a release guarantee.

What this means for you: Someone who receives media through Grav should not receive the original location/device metadata from the file you selected. We still recommend avoiding screenshots or exported files from other apps if they may already contain visible location clues.

You decide who can message you

Being in the same Grav does not automatically give someone access to your inbox. You can choose whether people in a Feed may send you a message request, and a conversation begins only after you approve it.

You can also share a personal message invitation with someone directly. They do not need to join one of your Feeds first.

What this means for you: No open inbox. No random messages. You choose who gets through.

Connect without opening your inbox

Share a personal message QR code or invitation link with someone you trust. It opens a private conversation without adding them to one of your Feeds.

What this means for you: Your Feed invitations and your message invitations are separate, because joining your circle should not automatically mean entering your inbox.

Built to protect your private spaces

Grav uses account authentication, controlled access, secure connections, protected storage, short-lived media links, blocking, and reporting tools to help keep your spaces private.

What this means for you: Privacy here is a product decision, not an advertising setting.

No ad networks or third-party behavioral analytics SDKs in the app

Most apps include third-party software libraries that report your behavior back to advertising and analytics companies, even if the app itself has no ads. These libraries run silently in the background and can track which screens you visit, how long you spend on each one, what you tap, and sometimes link that behavior to profiles used for advertising across other apps.

The Grav apps do not include ad networks, tracking domains, or third-party behavioral analytics SDKs. We do collect first-party operational data such as account-linked crash diagnostics, security logs, push tokens, and account activity. Aggregate product metrics can be derived from retained memberships and interactions. These records help us run, secure, and support the app.

This public website does not load Google Analytics or set analytics cookies. Cloudflare hosts the site and provides request, error, and performance metrics. The live site also loads Cloudflare's browser performance beacon, which reports page-load measurements and page/referrer URLs. Cloudflare documents this beacon as cookie-free. Google Fonts receives normal requests to deliver our typefaces.

See our Privacy Proof Center and browser checks for the website findings and provider boundaries.

What this means for you: Your in-app activity is not sold to advertisers or used to build an ad profile. Website performance monitoring and first-party app diagnostics are disclosed separately.

Your private posts stay inside your Feed

Private posts are protected by access rules on our side, not just by what the app chooses to show. Membership decides what you can see, and that rule is enforced before any content is returned to a device.

What this means for you: Membership rules restrict access to private posts. Authorized access for operations, support, safety, and legal needs is described in our Privacy Policy.

Shared links to your photos and videos stop working

Private media is served through short-lived access URLs. The app requests a fresh URL when needed, and copied links should expire rather than becoming permanent public media URLs.

What this means for you: Screenshots of a URL bar, or links captured by network inspection tools, cannot be used to access your content indefinitely.

You control what disappears

Deleting a message you sent removes its content for everyone in the conversation and may leave a neutral deleted-message marker. Removing a conversation from your own view clears it for you without reaching into another person's copy. Deleting a post removes that post and its media.

Deleting your account removes the account and the content you authored from active Grav systems. Content other people created themselves stays theirs. Narrow safety, legal, fraud, security, financial, and audit requirements can hold limited records for a while, and we spell those out in the Privacy Policy.

Your conversations stay available until you delete them, so you do not lose the thread when you switch devices.

What this means for you: Message, conversation, post, and account deletion each do exactly what their name says.

Security questions

How are Grav Messages protected?

Grav Messages are protected by layered controls:

  • HTTPS/TLS while information travels between the app and our servers
  • Authenticated accounts, so a conversation is tied to a signed-in identity
  • Conversation-membership rules that define who belongs to a thread
  • Database row-level access policies enforced on our side, not just in the app
  • Private storage with short-lived media links instead of public URLs
  • Approval-based message requests, so a stranger cannot open a thread with you
  • Blocking, which cuts off contact in both directions
  • Revocable and expiring QR invitations
  • Defined moderation, support, security, and legal access paths

Grav Messages are server-backed. Grav stores message content so it can be delivered, synchronized across your devices, and restored when you sign in again, and so it can be handled when a participant reports something, when we investigate security or abuse, when you ask support for help, or when the law requires it. Grav does not use private Messages for advertising, sell them, or share them with data brokers.

Who can open a conversation with me?

Only someone you approve, someone whose request you accept, or someone you invited with your personal message QR code. Blocking cuts off access and contact in both directions, and invitations can be revoked or left to expire.

Privacy here is free. If you want more Feeds, larger groups, and the features that make it more fun, that is what Grav+ is for. The protections on this page are not behind a paywall.
