01 / Which Muse?
Which product this guide covers
Muse Image is Meta's image-generation model inside Meta AI. It creates and edits pictures from prompts and reference photos. Meta also offers a separate personal-agent product called Muse. This guide covers Muse Image in Meta AI, not that agent's connectors, memory files or training switch. Muse Image announcement, Muse personal-agent announcement.
The useful starting point: limit what you upload, review who can use your saved likeness, and treat chat deletion, public-post removal and shared-link deletion as separate jobs.
02 / What changed
What changed after the launch
On 10 July 2026, Meta withdrew the feature that let people generate pictures by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts as references. Muse Image itself was not withdrawn. Do not follow an old Instagram “Sharing and reuse” walkthrough as though it were a current, universal Muse Image opt-out. Meta's dated correction.
Meta still describes prompt-based generation, uploaded-photo editing, combining photos, presets and drawn annotations. Availability varies by feature, country and language; do not assume every Meta app has the same controls. Current image-generation overview.
03 / Before uploading
Before you upload
Meta AI can work with the photo you send, including visible text and surrounding details. Crop out addresses, account numbers, school names and anything else unnecessary before uploading. Ask permission before using someone else's personal photo. This is practical exposure reduction, not a promise that cropping makes an image anonymous. How Meta AI processes photos.
Regular image-generation interactions can be used to improve AI at Meta. Meta's help also says it may send messages and general information such as your region to selected partners when its AI cannot answer a query. Meta's image-generation help.
Personalization can draw on location, profile details and interests inferred from activity across Meta products. A private social profile should not be treated as a promise that information you separately send to Meta AI stays out of its processing. Meta AI chat documentation.
04 / Your likeness
Restrict your saved likeness
If you have set up the likeness feature in the Meta AI app:
- Open the app's menu and tap your profile picture.
- Open Your likeness.
- Choose Only me if you do not want other users creating media with that saved likeness.
Options can differ by age or country. This control applies to the Meta AI/Vibes likeness feature; it is not a universal block on someone uploading a photo of you elsewhere.
You can also delete your likeness from this screen. Meta says that removes the onboarding photo and voice recording, but existing vibes featuring you remain. Check Media that includes me separately. Meta also says people added through this feature can view and delete drafts that include them, even before those drafts are posted. Likeness permissions and deletion.
06 / Chats & public posts
Delete chats and media; remove public posts separately
For the Meta AI app, Meta documents this route:
Menu → Settings → Data & privacy → Manage your information → Delete all chats and media → Delete all.
Save anything you need before choosing a bulk-delete action. Meta says chats, prompts and generated media will no longer appear in its history/media areas. Public vibes are not removed by this action. Remove those separately, using the public-vibe removal control in the same information-management area. Public posts on meta.ai likewise have a separate removal control. Other people's vibes featuring you require their own likeness/media controls. Deletion and public-post removal.
07 / Training & ads
Training and ads are different controls
Meta describes AI interactions as a signal for personalizing content and advertising in participating regions. Ad preferences adjust what you see; this announcement does not describe them as a switch that stops all use of AI interactions. Meta's explanation of recommendations.
In the EU, Meta says people can object to the training use described in its notice, including AI interactions and adults' public content. It says existing and new objections will be honored. Use Meta's current notice or official privacy tools rather than posting an opt-out statement to your feed. EU training notice.
Meta's general objection guidance covers qualifying processing in the EU and UK. Its route is the Privacy Rights Request channel: select the relevant product, choose the objection option and follow the instructions. An objection is distinct from deleting information. We have not established one worldwide Muse Image training-off switch. Official objection guidance.
08 / Incognito Chat
What about Incognito Chat?
Meta offers Incognito Chat in the Meta AI app and WhatsApp, describing conversations processed privately and disappearing by default. We have not confirmed that Muse Image generation or photo editing runs inside that mode. Do not assume an ordinary image chat has Incognito protection, or that switching modes retroactively protects earlier uploads. Incognito announcement.
09 / Evidence limits
What we could not confirm
- A single retention period covering every Muse Image prompt, upload, output, backup and safety record.
- That deletion reverses training already completed or removes every retained copy immediately.
- A complete, current country-by-country list of Muse Image controls.
- That a likeness setting prevents all possible uses of someone's appearance outside that feature.
These are limits of the evidence reviewed, not proof that no further controls exist. If your screen differs, use the linked Meta help for your product and region.
