01 / Before you begin
Before you begin
You can reduce contact matching, device access and some reuse without making your account private. These controls do not make public posts confidential or stop all data processing.
This guide follows documented consumer-account controls. Available settings can differ by region, age, device and account type. Organization Accounts can have different feature availability. The policy examples below identify their regions; check the policy linked in your own app if you live elsewhere. TikTok: account types
02 / Synced contacts
Stop contact syncing, then remove old uploads
Open Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Sync contacts and Facebook friends.
Turn off contact and Facebook syncing you do not want. Separately select Remove previously synced contacts. Removing your phone's contacts permission or switching syncing off does not, by itself, remove earlier uploads. TikTok: suggested accounts
On Android, this removal also covers previously linked device email addresses. It does not remove the email or phone number used for signup or authentication. TikTok: linked Android emails
03 / Account suggestions
Reduce suggestions to people you know
Under Privacy → Suggest your account to others, turn off the options for contacts, Facebook friends, and people who open or send links to you.
This reduces those discovery routes. Your account can still be suggested to people you follow or interact with. For adults, mutual connections can also remain a route. TikTok: suggested accounts
04 / Phone permissions
Review location and photo access on your phone
- iPhone: Open Settings → Privacy & Security, choose a data category, then review TikTok's access.
- Android: Open Settings → Apps → TikTok → Permissions, then review each permission. Names can differ by device. Apple permissions, Android permissions
Revoke location access if you do not need it. TikTok's US and EEA/UK/Switzerland policies describe approximate-location estimates using information such as IP addresses and SIM cards, separate from device location permissions. Avoid adding location tags or revealing identifiable places in posts. TikTok US privacy policy, TikTok EEA, UK and Switzerland privacy policy
For photos, choose selected-item or limited access where offered instead of your whole library. Apple supports limited photo-library access; Android's photo picker can share individual photos and videos. Availability depends on your operating system and the app's workflow. Apple limited-library documentation, Android photo picker
Only import media you are comfortable providing to TikTok. Both its US and EEA/UK/Switzerland policies describe collecting content during creation or import, even when it is not ultimately published. TikTok US privacy policy, TikTok EEA, UK and Switzerland privacy policy
05 / Ads & activity
Review ads separately from other privacy controls
Open Settings and privacy → Ads and read the controls available for your account.
In the EEA and Switzerland, TikTok documents a Personalized ads control covering activity on and off TikTok. Elsewhere, an available control may cover only off-TikTok activity. These settings govern ad selection, not every reason TikTok processes data. TikTok: ads and your data
UK exception: TikTok announced an adult Ad-Free subscription rollout in May 2026, alongside a free version with personalized ads. Follow your account's current choices rather than assuming an older regional toggle still applies. TikTok's UK announcement
Where available, Disconnect advertisers limits future use of particular advertisers' off-TikTok data for personalized ads. Clear activity disconnects previously associated off-TikTok activity. Neither should be described as stopping all tracking or deleting everything TikTok knows about you. TikTok's explanation
06 / Downloads & reuse
Limit downloads and built-in reuse
Under Privacy → Downloads, turn Video downloads off.
This limits TikTok's download feature for existing and future posts. It does not retrieve copies people already saved, and people can still share links. Treat anything publicly viewable as potentially recordable or copyable. TikTok: downloads
Under Privacy → Reuse of content → Allow reuse of content from, TikTok currently documents Everyone and Friends. Choose the narrower audience you want.
For individual videos, turn Allow reuse of content off:
- Before posting: More options on the posting screen.
- Already posted: open the video → … → Privacy settings.
This also affects Stitch, stickers and adding the post to Stories. Caution: "Remove all posts" in reuse history permanently removes the original and associated Duet/Stitch posts. TikTok: Duet privacy settings
07 / What stays public
Know what remains public
Public posts can be seen and shared beyond TikTok and may appear in search engines or other sites. Review your profile, captions, background details and location clues before publishing. Limit individual posts to a smaller audience when necessary. TikTok EEA, UK and Switzerland privacy policy
Your nickname, username and profile photo remain visible even with a private account. Age, local law and Family Pairing can change available controls; under-16 accounts cannot enable downloads or allow others to Duet or Stitch their videos. TikTok: teen privacy settings
08 / AI controls
What about AI?
TikTok's US policy explicitly covers AI prompts, files and responses, and describes using information to train, test and improve machine-learning technology. We did not verify an account-wide switch that opts every user out of every AI-related use. Avoid sending sensitive material to optional AI features. TikTok US privacy policy
The AI-generated content posting control labels a post; it is not a documented training opt-out. TikTok: AI-generated content
The practical goal: keep the work you want to publish public, while supplying fewer unnecessary contacts, files, permissions and identifying details.
