01 / Before you begin
Before you begin
Controls can differ by region, device and account.
Reddit can be valuable for discovering communities and learning from strangers. The privacy question starts with what you choose to publish, not just what appears on your profile.
02 / Public footprint
Understand the public footprint
Reddit's current Privacy Policy is effective July 1, 2026, revised May 26. It says public contributions can be seen and reshared without an account and may appear in search engines or AI chatbot answers. A pseudonym does not make the content private. Reddit also collects usage/device information and approximate IP-derived location. Reddit Privacy Policy
Before posting, remove details you would not want linked together later: an employer, distinctive schedule, precise location or another person's private information. That is practical risk reduction, not a guarantee of anonymity.
03 / Profile curation
Separate profile curation from post visibility
On the web, open Settings → Profile → Curate your profile → Content and activity. In the app, open your profile → three-line menu → Profile curation. You can choose which communities' contributions appear on your profile, including hiding all. But posts/comments remain available in their original communities. Public posts/comments can still appear in on- and off-platform search. Reddit profile settings
There is also a moderator exception: posting, commenting, editing, modmail and approval requests can give that community's moderators 28 days of access to your full public post/comment profile history; fresh interactions restart the period. This is not access to all private messages. Reddit moderator visibility
04 / AI licensing
Know what AI licensing means, and what it excludes
Reddit's User Agreement says you retain ownership rights while granting a broad content license, explicitly including AI/machine-learning training as described in its Public Content Policy. Reddit User Agreement, section 5
Reddit licenses public content to partners including language-model makers. Its Public Content Policy excludes private communities from those licensing arrangements and says it does not license private messages, private group chats or modmail. Do not describe every Reddit conversation as AI-training material. Reddit Public Content Policy
The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal account-level switch that excludes all public contributions from every AI use. Advertising personalization controls are not such a switch. Choosing a private community changes the publication context; it is not a guarantee against a member copying content.
05 / Ad preferences
Review ad personalization without overpromising
Use Reddit's Privacy Settings to review the ad-personalization controls offered to your account. Reddit says the option for personalizing ads from activity on Reddit is available only in selected countries. Even with personalized ads off, ads can use current-session activity, community membership, account information and approximate IP location. Therefore this is not a no-ads or no-processing setting. Reddit ad controls
Reddit also points to browser cookie controls, device settings and authorized-app management as separate ways to limit sharing/access. Review unnecessary connected apps rather than assuming one privacy preference covers them. Reddit information controls
06 / Content & deletion
Delete the content before deleting the account
Account deletion does not delete your posts and comments: it disassociates them from your username. Remove contributions you want removed while you still have access. Messages/chats can also remain disassociated after account deletion. What account deletion does
On reddit.com, go to Account Settings → Advanced → Delete Account. The mobile flow differs: profile → three-line menu → Settings → Support → Delete account on iOS; on Android, choose Account settings for u/username, then scroll to Delete account. Reddit says deletion is irreversible and its server-removal/anonymization process commences within 90 days, not that every record disappears within 90 days. Cancel Premium separately if applicable. Reddit account deletion
Deleted data is made unavailable on Reddit promptly, with further retention possible for legal or legitimate business needs such as safety. Reddit data deletion
Reddit requires commercial data licensees to stop using/displaying deleted content and supplies deletion-notification tools. It cannot prevent all internet third parties from retaining copies. Those requirements are not proof that deleting a post reverses past model training. Reddit licensee deletion rules
07 / The Grav difference
Where Grav is different
Use public communities for discovery; choose a deliberately limited audience for personal sharing. Grav describes invite-only Feeds, chronological feeds and no engagement algorithm. Its privacy policy says no advertising/data sales or cross-app tracking. Grav nevertheless stores content and operational data, including server-backed Messages for delivery and synchronization. It should not be described as zero-storage or end-to-end encrypted. Grav home · Grav privacy policy
08 / What remains
What this guide cannot establish
We cannot verify whether a particular post entered a particular training dataset, whether a third-party copy survives, or whether your account has a region-specific setting. The documentation distinguishes public-content licensing, ad preferences, profile display and deletion; so should any privacy checklist.
